AUM, or Assets Under Management, represents the total market value of the securities a mutual fund holds or manages on behalf of its investors. Essentially, it's the cumulative amount of investments made by the fund. For example, if an investor puts INR 1,00,000 into a mutual fund, that amount becomes part of the fund's AUM.

The value of AUM fluctuates with stock market changes and the fund's performance. It reflects the fund's overall success, but investors shouldn't rely solely on this metric. Larger AUMs allow fund managers to make more strategic decisions, and management fees are usually a percentage of the total assets.

AUM change daily as the Net Asset Value (NAV) adjusts and as new investments come in or existing ones are withdrawn and as the value of the underlying securities change. This dynamic nature makes AUM a key indicator of a mutual fund's health and performance.

What is the Impact of AUM on Mutual Fund Fees?

The expense ratio, which includes management fees and operational costs, is charged by fund house for their services. This ratio is calculated as a percentage of the scheme?s AUM (Assets Under Management). Therefore, a larger AUM results in higher fees, while a smaller AUM leads to lower fees.

Conclusion

AUM, or assets under management, is a measure of the size of a mutual fund portfolio. This refers to all the assets that a financial institution or investment manager manages on behalf of its clients. AUM is a key metric that represents the total value of assets managed by investment firms. The metric measures the success of the firm in attracting and retaining customers and generating income. Therefore, before investing, it is important to understand Assets Under Management.
