With Axis Mutual Fund, the choice becomes simpler owing to its strong track record, experience in managing a diverse range of passive funds, and dependable leadership.
In this article, we’ll provide an overview of the fund and its investing methodology.
Axis BSE India Sector Leaders Index Fund an open-ended fund that aims to replicate the performance of the BSE India Sector Leaders Index. This index comprises the top 3 companies (by market capitalisation) from every sector that forms a part of the BSE 500 index.
Hence, the fund provides exposure to leading Indian companies within each sector, providing diversification as well as growth potential. Companies that are in a leadership position within their sectors typically demonstrate strong fundamentals and have future-ready strategies.
The advantage of investing in companies that are in a leadership position is that they usually have a competitive moat, which helps them maintain their leadership position. These businesses usually differentiate themselves by having high entry barriers, strong brand recall, cutting-edge innovation, powerful network, and so on.
The index chooses its constituent stocks from the BSE 500. The BSE 500 index consists of the 500 largest listed companies in India in terms of market capitalisation. The index then identifies the top 3 companies from each of the sectors that are a part of the BSE 500.
Each sector chosen is as per the common India Industry Classification Structure. As of Jan 14, 2026, the BSE 500 index comprises 21 sectors out of a total of 22 sectors in India. This indicates wide market coverage and diversification.
The top 3 companies in every sector are chosen as per the average six-month daily total market capitalisation.
The composition and weightage of the index is revisited and revised once every six months, that is, in June and December.
To ensure that the index remains balanced and has high levels of diversification, the index also implements caps on the weightage accorded to each stock within the portfolio.
The maximum weightage cap is restricted to 5% of the total portfolio. This means that the fund will not invest more than 5% of its corpus in any single company. Similarly, the minimum weightage cap is restricted to 1% of the total portfolio. This ensures that each stock has the potential to make an impact on the performance of the fund.
The weightage of each stock is re-evaluated each quarter to ensure consistent adherence to the policy. The weightage of the index is as per the free float market capitalisation of each company.
The index is highly diversified in terms of both sectors and the number of companies that it invests in. As mentioned earlier, the index comprises of 21 different sectors which provides exposure to almost the entirety of the major sectors of India.
